Work in progress: Where are we on the way to “Mein Bildungsraum”?

As a kind of meta-platform, “Mein Bildungsraum” is intended to bundle digital education programmes and create a nationwide teaching and learning infrastructure with additional functionalities and services. In order to enable access to and integration of teaching and learning programmes, basic architectures were designed with Research and development projects in the field of education, which were intended to guarantee the requirements for interoperability, security and transparency. As a result, three platform prototypes were developed, which presented different technological variants and possibilities as part of the ideas competition.

Based on the results of the prototype developments, the requirements for a digital network infrastructure for education, announced as “Nationale Bildungsplattform”(national education platform), are currently being defined. The requirements for a dynamic procurement system (DPS) have been established for this purpose. From the third quarter of 2022, implementation will start with clearly defined calls for tenders within the framework of the DPS (so-called 'mini-competitions').

In autumn 2022, a continuous stakeholder dialogue will also be launched for the purpose of an ongoing exchange with representatives from all areas of education. These formal levels will be supplemented by a purely professional and/or technical dialogue based on the respective development contexts of the networking infrastructure. Among other things, expert groups on the topics of “Digital Certificates”, “Databases and Data Space”, “Data Protection, Data Security and Digital Sovereignty” are currently being set up.

In addition to the prototypes of the network platforms, 55 research and development projects have so far been funded with EU funds (NextGenerationEU), which develop learning path-oriented teaching and learning programmes and establish them as compatible for “Mein Bildungsraum”. The projects promote educational offers for learners that are user-centred, make use of the platform's networking functions and are compatible with the specific requirements. Through digital teaching and learning scenarios, the projects focus on methodological knowledge and digital skills on the part of teachers.

All of these projects are to be linked and made accessible via the metaplatform. To this end, connectivity has been and will be validated using the BIRD platform prototype. If this is the case, the projects will be supported in their implementation in a further funding phase. This second application phase is currently underway. The funded projects will then be announced in autumn 2022.
